{"id":19289,"date":"2020-09-19T18:03:10","date_gmt":"2020-09-19T16:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rertech.it\/?p=19289"},"modified":"2022-08-30T12:12:20","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T10:12:20","slug":"what-is-an-otdr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rertech.it\/en\/2020\/09\/19\/checose-un-otdr\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an OTDR?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>OTDRs: Basics and Usage Techniques Roberto Noris Rertech<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an OTDR?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>OTDR: optical time domain reflectometer<\/li><li>Same principle as radar: it emits pulses into the fiber optic network and \u201clistens\u201d to the reflections along the network<\/li><li>It allows you to generate a map of the entire optical network, to establish the distance, any connectors or joints present, breaks, bends in the fiber, etc.<\/li><li>Its use requires a thorough understanding of the operating principle and the main setting parameters<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rayleigh backscattering operating principle<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is a physical phenomenon of optical fiber: while light propagates from A to B, a small portion (about 1 millionth, -\u201060 dB) propagates in the opposite direction from B to A.<\/li><li>The larger the core cross-section, the lower the backscattering<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fresnel&#039;s Reflections<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to backscattering, which is intrinsic to optical fiber, reflections are generally generated when there is a sudden change in the transmission index through which the light flux passes. These are called &quot;Fresnel reflections.&quot; For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In case of fiber interruption (sudden passage to air), for example fiber end or breakage<\/li><li>In the case of a pair of optical connectors (fiber\/air gap\/fiber) or a mechanical joint<\/li><li>In particular cases of small imperfections of the optical fiber core<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a
